AFAIK The alac atom is where the information is supposed to be. It is
there when the proper software (i.e. using Apple libraries) create the
files. A missing alac atom would be one thing but for ffmpeg to put the
wrong info 16 bits in the field is a bug - this cannot be argued and it
should be easily fixed.

I may be able to find time to see how player deduce the file is 24 bit
alac WITHOUT using the alac atom.

One aspect of the problem is that LMS stream files - so the "alac" atom
is where data should be when streamed.  A lot of players look at the
file - jumping forwards and back before playing so that they can make a
good stab at playing a badly formatted file - its possible that the
players uses the alac atom to know it is alac but then has choice of
sample size.
