Another way to help to narrow things down ... try playing internet radio. You could do this with direct streaming (player connects to the internet source) or proxied (player connects to LMS which connects to internet).
If internet radio with direct streaming also has breakups then it suggests (but not 100%) that the problem is in the local networking.
