As I have been suspecting, I have messed up my install of openssl.
Setting SSL_CERT_DIR is a workaround that solves my problem with running
LMS, but the issue is that I had downloaded a new version of openssl
from Github in the recent past, and when building, I had used
./configure and unwittingly set OPENSSLDIR to /usr/local/ssl. This dir
was later removed, but reinstalling openssl from the official repository
did not change OPENSSLDIR - "/usr/bin/openssl version -a" is still
returning OPENSSLDIR=/usr/local/ssl. That has me a bit confused, as to
where that is getting done. Maybe I should have run "sudo make
uninstall." I have been very bad.
