Again, there are a large number of threads about electricity consumption
of always on servers which may give you some more information.  

Depending on your choice of hardware, you may be able to program it to
startup/shutdown at certain times of the day and night which will help
with energy consumption (although startup/shutdown can be quite
intensive power-wise).  Look at the BIOS (if Windows) to see if
startup/shutdown can be scheduled.

If spontaneous combustion is a serious concern, I guess you'd be stuck
with manually turning it on and off. 

On mp3tunes, my experience is that streams can be quite choppy even at
high bitrate mp3 - bandwidth issues at my end and server load at theirs
by the looks of it.  It's a good portable solution for when you don't
want to have a server on, but I don't think it's designed for serious
high bitrate listening.
