While you're correct about NPR/PBS being a grossly inefficient
operation with way too many employees, I strongly disagree with stopping
the taxpayer funding.

NPR is the source of countless intelligent, well-researched and
thorough stories on virtually every topic under the sun. PBS likewise is
also a source for extremely high quality non-fiction programming. Nova,
Frontline, The American Experience and American masters are just a few
PBS shows that are consistently well-made and thought provoking.

What makes these two media outlets indispensable is the fact that there
are very few other media organizations that have set the bar as high.
HBO and Showtime are comparable in the level of tv quality but besides
the BBC, there is a vast wasteland of commercial radio that fills most
of the dial.

Spin that radio dial and then spin through the tv dial and try to find
more than a few programs that actually inform and educate. You'll have a
very easy time finding blathering idiots like Rush Limbaugh and others
spewing mindless misinformation and then on the tv side you'll find a
nearly endless assortment of reality programming scraping down to the
lowest common denominator.

a fair number of folks on this forum find the BBC to be indispensable
and I would argue that here in the U.S. PBS and NPR are equally
indispensable.
