I thought we were on to something for a moment. I changed "squidGuard.log" to "squidguard.log" and sure enough it gets written to on restarting squid. 2006-01-03 22:12:31 [3664] /var/lib/squidguard/dest/adult/domains: No such file or directory 2006-01-03 22:12:31 [3664] going into emergency mode 2006-01-08 14:03:30 [9810] (squidGuard): can't open configfile /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf 2006-01-08 14:03:30 [9810] going into emergency mode 2006-01-08 14:03:30 [9813] (squidGuard): can't open configfile /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf 2006-01-08 14:03:30 [9813] going into emergency mode 2006-01-08 14:03:30 [9812] (squidGuard): can't open configfile /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf 2006-01-08 14:03:30 [9812] going into emergency mode 2006-01-08 14:03:30 [9811] (squidGuard): can't open configfile /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf 2006-01-08 14:03:30 [9811] going into emergency mode 2006-01-08 14:03:30 [9814] (squidGuard): can't open configfile /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf 2006-01-08 14:03:30 [9814] going into emergency mode 2006-01-08 14:05:33 [9810] ending emergency mode, stdin empty 2006-01-08 14:05:33 [9811] ending emergency mode, stdin empty 2006-01-08 14:05:33 [9812] ending emergency mode, stdin empty 2006-01-08 14:05:33 [9813] ending emergency mode, stdin empty 2006-01-08 14:05:33 [9814] ending emergency mode, stdin empty 2006-01-08 14:05:43 [9902] (squidGuard): can't open configfile /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf 2006-01-08 14:05:43 [9902] going into emergency mode 2006-01-08 14:05:43 [9903] (squidGuard): can't open configfile /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf 2006-01-08 14:05:43 [9903] going into emergency mode 2006-01-08 14:05:43 [9905] (squidGuard): can't open configfile /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf 2006-01-08 14:05:43 [9905] going into emergency mode 2006-01-08 14:05:44 [9906] (squidGuard): can't open configfile /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf 2006-01-08 14:05:44 [9906] going into emergency mode 2006-01-08 14:05:43 [9904] (squidGuard): can't open configfile /etc/squid/squidGuard.conf 2006-01-08 14:05:44 [9904] going into emergency mode [EMAIL PROTECTED] mark]# (I show the last line of the previous entries dated 3/1/06) Noting the contents of the file (2 attempts - one at 14:03 and one at 14:05) it looked as if SquidGuard could not read SquidGuard.conf (Strange, because it can read it OK if I start it from the command line and Permissions were set to "squid") Anyhow I tried chmod to 644 and Hey Presto! no more entry in /var/log/squidguard/squidguard.log - but unfortunately still no proxy either. I still get the same error in the squid cache.log file and nothing more is being written to squidguard.log (I have tried several things since 2:00 pm and still the last entry is 14:05 - Does it *always* write to the log even if everything is OK?) Hoping you can help... Thanks again. Mark
