I suppose you could say that Squirrelmail is MAINLY an IMAP4 MUA (Mail
User Agent). Along the way it provides support for other protocols, either
by itself or with the help of third party plugins. Protocls such as SMTP,
POP3 ("Fetch"), SIEVE, LDAP etc. All these serve complementary to the
IMAP4 functionality.
Think of it this way: IMAP is there for you to read mail from a server.
Besides reading, you might also want to send mail (SMTP), use directory
services (LDAP), set up mail filters (SIEVE), and fetch mail from POP
servers to your IMAP account.
So, the answer to your final question is a no --- it would take some
hacks to isolate individual functionality from Squirrelmail, to make it
purely a mail sender, for instance. It's not impossible, but you need to
delete and simplify some of the code inside.
In the (relatively distant) future, the various backend services will be
more isolated and the program structure will be a lot more flexible, so
it might just be possible to use different components individually.
Hope this makes sense.
