You're half right (which of course also means you're half wrong).  SquirrelMail 
handles SSL/TLS very well.  It does NOT support the STARTTLS directive, however, which 
means you need to have your IMAP server listening on a dedicated SSL/TLS port. (All 
connections to that port use SSL, no STARTTLS command required first).  You also need 
to have PHP 4.3.x or greater.

For more details, check doc/authentication.txt which comes with the SquirrelMail 
distribution.
