This would probably help if clients were using Thunderbird or Outlook but
I don't think Squirrelmail makes any use of the IMAP IDLE command (since
it doesn't maintain persistent connections).  IDLE is the only time
Courier uses famd in order to determine when new mails are delivered.  He
may want to consider having those clients use Thunderbird instead.  The
Enhanced IDLE mode means that clients aren't constantly polling the server
for new mail causing the server to do an fstat.  Instead, the server will
notify the client.  Lot less I/O...
