I understand `$var()` and it's explicit difference from `$vn()`, so there's no
need to discuss that. This is strictly about the `{sql.val.str}` and
re-reading it's documentation, I see that it is doing what is is documented to
do:
> Like sql.val, but output string '' for null values.
I will point out that this transformation is at best poorly named, and when
compared to the (much better named, but similarly functioning aside from the
quoting) `{val.ne}` it's confusing.
