You don't need to re-compile ssh just to generate keys, or have I
misunderstood your question?

Just enter as with superuser permission:

ssh-keygen -b 1024 -N ""

Remember to do it as root (superuser) or you will create client keys
instead.

If you do don't have ssh on the other hosts at all then get the latest
ssh and compile it. I might be a bit simplistic here, but I'm not sure
what you need.
