Many thanks to those people who replied. There were several suggestions, but
unfortunately none 'solved' the problem. I did find, however, that the
problem stemmed from the use of X forwarding with openSSH. By disabling this
vim worked fine. I have now disabled forwarding except where it is needed,
and in that instance editing is not (generally) required. So the problem has
been 'avoided' but not really 'solved'. I tried using truss to see what was
going on, but have not been able to determine exactly where or why the
messages occur. Oh well.
