I've been down the same alternative desktop OS road with LinuxPPC 2000 on a
Powermac 7500 G3 350 and a StarMax 3000/200 desktop. Though I didn't
experience the same crazy color troubles you described, video performance
was simply not up to par with the same hardware running MacOS 8.6.
I decided to stick with 8.6 because it's been rock stable for me on these
machines.
