Hi there,
I have SuSE Linux 7.1 installed on my Starmax, and before that I had
LinuxPPC Q399 installed. In both those systems there was accelerated video
support for the standard ATI Mach64 chip on Starmax 4000 & 3000 machines.
Possibly you just need to setup your XFree86 driver differently. You can
find out which version of this you're using by just typing X -version at the
console. If you have 3.3.x then look in /etc/XF86Config for your video
settings; if you have 4.x.x then look in /etc/X11/XF86Config. I think that
you need to specify 'ati' as the driver.
I have a SH Rage Orion card installed now, just to get more VRAM and desktop
space in Linux, and that works ok with accelerated X using XFree86 4.0.2.
There are reputedly 'development' drivers available for the cheap Voodoo3
cards too, but I've tried one of those and never managed to get it to work.
(It worked ok with the 'fbdev' framebuffer device, but as you've already
seen unaccelerated X is a complete pain.)
I like Linux, mainly because I have a few particular things I need to do
which it does very well. As for the idea of using Linux to replace MacOS as
a home desktop OS, well that's surely another question entirely... ;-)
