See, I thought you had a StarMax which also has a 4400 motherboard, but who
knows what Motorola changed.

My StarMax has a SCSI CD-ROM. Motorola's SCSI is not Apple standard. My
StarMax will boot off the CD-ROM without the 3.5.1 driver, but if I boot off
the hard drive and then put a disk in the CD-ROM, the system will not see
it. That's what that 5.3.1 driver fixes. Why not just try it and see?
Change the name for the 5.3.1 driver to "Apple CD Driver 7.6" or something
so you can tell them apart in Extension Manager.

No, I mean the new Apple drivers. On G3s and G4s they replace all older
drivers for supported drives. You're right, I do get driver conflict, but
only from Toast and then only seldom. No opening drawers, and no
"...initialize..." messages.

I run the Apple 5.3.1 driver for my CD-ROM, and the Toast 4.1.2 driver for
the CD-RW. They both load and run in the same extension set and they don't
fight much. After hard drive boot I can read off either drive, and I can
boot off either drive. It doesn't get much better than that on a 4 1/2 year
old clone.
Don't worry; experiment a little, see what you can do. That drawer thing is
a real pest.
