Having purchased a power supply unnecessarily, when the problem was the
PRAM battery, I do recommend that you check to see it the power supply
is really dead. The voltages it supplies are 5 and 12 volts--which are
standard for most computers. The differences are the wattage ratings
which cover how many devices will the supply assembly be expected to
power, and the configuration and mounting provisions to fit it in place.

I may be being too simplistic about this, but the 4400/SM has the CUDA
circuit which controls the activation of the power supply unit. If the
PRAM is corrupted, the power supply won't respond to the keyboard or
panel buttons, and looks for all the world like a bad supply.

If you have removed the PS and have it sitting on a desk, check the
voltages on all the connectors with a voltmeter. If you don't have one,
plug a hard drive to one of the device power connectors and see if it
starts up. If it does, you may not need a replacement supply. I'm not
near any of my machines at the moment, so I can't double check my advice
for you. Do read the many FAQs available about CUDA, PRAM, batteries
and power supplies.

The SM has 4 motherboard connectors besides the device power connectors
and I don't know what they're all for and if that's what's meant by
proprietary, but I'll bet a lot of power supplies sold are recalculating
as ones bought and then discovered not to be necessary.

If someone knows of schematics that tell us of the voltages at the MoBo
connections, I'd appreciate them posting an URL.
