This is hard to answer. I've had perfectly normal sounding HDs die sudden 
deaths, but I used an HD for a couple years that I had to literally knock 
or even pound on to get it to spin up. All told though, it's days are 
numbered so I'd either replace it while you can or at least make sure not 
to keep anything critical on it.

If it were something like a loose screw on the outside, then maybe. If it's 
something internal, you'd need a cleanroom and other tools. In other words, 
not likely :)

I've used Western Digital for awhile, but lately I've bought a couple 
Maxtors with good results. I used to have problems with Maxtors but it 
seems they've gotten better in the 10+ gig era. Just about any IDE should 
work fine.
