Jim, I've had this same (?) problem for years and never figured out the reason why it would not restart using the restart menu or button on tower...
When I use the restart from pull down menu or on the tower, I only get to see the cursor on the initial screen which then freezes in less than 30 seconds (nothing else on the screen but the cursor). I can only use the main power button or keyboard start or restart. My starmax: 5000/275 G3 accelerated now at 325mhz/130 cache OS 8.6 A.
