Hi Sue
If you can get away with it, turn OFF virtual memory. VM is using your hard
drive's empty space in place of actual RAM. It accesses that space much slower
than RAM. Is your HD anywhere near full? If so, do some cleaning and toss stuff
you don't need to free up space. Running a disk utility and then defragging
your drive with Norton's Speed Disk or similar utility could help. Looking
under the Apple in the Finder with "About this computer" will give you an idea
of how much memory you are using when you have your apps open. If you have
enough RAM to cover it, then turn off VM and restart. If you need more, set it
in the Memory Control panel for MORE (not less). If you are running an older
OS, there's a little guy called "Mac OS Purge" that could help, it clears
system memory, good to run before you launch something.
My advice, turn off VM and do some basic maintenance: toss out old unnecessary
files, defrag hard drive, rebuild desktop.
