I thought exactly that, ages ago now, so I took out all the aliases to large folders (and I mean large, like, all my apps, music, files, are in there), and rebooted - no effect at all. Which is odd, as considering the behaviour of when you remove and replace such a folder into Apple Menu Items, it matches.
