Every day? And in any case, it takes a lot longer to rebuild it than that.
Could be a partial rebuild, or optimisation.

> Have you run Disk First Aid and done a disk check lately?

This has been happening as long as I can remember - I've run Norton plenty
of times within that time.

A network connection attempt doesn't involve the hard disc.

yeah.

Yeah, just established that.

I thought exactly that, ages ago now, so I took out all the aliases to large
folders (and I mean large, like, all my apps, music, files, are in there),
and rebooted - no effect at all. Which is odd, as considering the behaviour
of when you remove and replace such a folder into Apple Menu Items, it
matches.

Might be worth trying this one again.

Is the desktop not just a set of folders, one per drive? Dunno why that
should take a while to scan.

I'd really rather not - I rely on the Finder maintaining my file comments,
as I have a huge quantity of URLs and long filenames (courtesy of Joliet
Volume Access) in them.

> Another thing to try is to trash the Finder Preferences file.

I'll try the Apple menu one, and removing A-Dock and stuff first.
