I too have had freezing problems with various USB devices connected my 4000. I have narrowed it to certain devices, not the card or drivers.
I have a Global Village modem and a Logitech USB mouse which both freeze 8.6 or 9.x. I also have several devices which have run without any problems, including an Agfa scanner and Epson printer. At one point I thought it might have to do with usb port-power, but adding a powered usb hub did not help. I also moved the position of the card, trying each slot one by one without success. Curiously, the Global Village documentation does state that it is not compatible with USB adapter cards which leads me to believe there is some difference (obviously) from a native USB port. Logitech did not give this warning yet the mouse causes the same freeze. Do native USB ports require a USB extension? -----Original Message----- From: StarMax List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Kirk McQuay Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2003 9:46 PM To: StarMax List Subject: USB Problem StarMax users..... I thought I'd put USB capability on my system (5500/325/JoeCard/OS9.1) this PM. Installed a Xircom PCI 2-Port USBCard, then downloaded Apple's USB Card Support 1.4.1 and upon initial testing, my Epson printer worked OK. Printed out everything I wanted - just fine. Then I began trying other apps and found my SM froze frequently. In fact, every time I tried to download emails via Outlook Express, the sys froze. These symptoms began only since I downloaded 1.4.1. There are 2 extensions (out of 6) in 1.4.1 that MUST be in the System Folder to enable OS9.1 to see the printer (via USB) in the Chooser. They.are [1] USB Device Extension, and [2] USB Support. If either of these extensions are not in the System Folder, the Chooser won't see the USB connection for my printer, but OE works fine. When both are in the Sys Folder, Outlook Express will fail every time I try to download email. Note: I use a cable modem and internet access thru a PCI-based NIC card. However, I've had ZERO problems with OE until I installed the USB extensions this PM. My 5-slot PCI bus looks like: 1} NIC card for internet access (closest to motherboard) 2] ATA Card for CDRW and HD 3] Display Card for my 19" fixed resolution monitor 4] new USB Card 5] open slot My thinking is that [1] I've got the wrong drivers, or [2] I need to swap around the various PCI cards above. I would have thought the USB would play nicely in slot 4, but........ What do you all think? Regards............
