You don't say if you have a desktop or tower modem.   The tower units 
are over-cooled if anything with both an intake and exhaust fan. 
You don't have to worry about external peripherals, just items added 
internally.   If you added something like a current video card with 
large heat sinks, or a high-end 10K RPM HD, you might have cooling 
issues.   Cleaning out the system once a year will keep the dust 
build-up minimal, which acts like insulation and will contribute to 
heat build-up.   Beyond that I would not worry about it until the SM 
starts locking up when it is hot.
