I just got an iPod and am using my old beige G3 desktop (we also have a
SM) to run it w/ OS 9.2.2 I have been told you can run it w/ OS 9.2.1 but
didn't try- the box says 9.2.2 required, though. I put in a bigger hard
drive, a FW card, and updated the OS specifically for the iPod.
I installed a firewire PCI card for it, so NO, you don't need a Mac w/ a
built-in/factory firewire port. I don't know why Apple says this- maybe some
FW cards haven't worked w/ them?. HOWEVER, you must have an older model iPod
to run it on OS 9.2, not the new models, which require OSX- they have a
different firmware. Easiest way to tell them apart is the older ones have
the firewire port on top, the newer have it on the bottom for the "dock"
cradle they can sit in. If it says "with dock" don't get it- that's the
newer one. Either type firewire card (combo usb or FW only) should work- the
combo will save a slot- I'm thinking about getting a combo so I can put in
an ATA controller card. I have 3 slots, all full now (video, usb, fw). Be
sure to connect a power cable to it if it has an internal connector for one-
it should- or it wont work and your computer will freeze like mine did. You
will need iPod software 1.2.6 or 1.3 not "2.whatever"- put the iPod Updater
on your computer and you can change the version in the iPod if it has
something else, even windows version- this only applies to the older models
though. If it has the version you need already on the iPod you don't need
the updater.> Here's the link to download 1.3:

You will get an iPod Help file w/ OS 9.2 that will give you some info on how
to run the iPod.

You also need iTunes2 only, not 1 or 4. Find wherever your mp3 files are
on your harddrive, and just drag and drop them into your iTunes2 "Library"
icon. The older iPods, aka 1st generation, came in 5, 10, and 15 gb models I
think.
>Can I
> move all the music to the PB, load it on a ipod and copy it back to the SM?
You CAN'T transfer files from an iPod to iTunes. Sorry- its' software
isn't designed to do that. However, according to the iPod help info it
appears that you can use the Options button to enable iPod as a hard disk,
transfer music or other files to there, then transfer them to another
computer with firewire and, I presume, iPod software- you can't play them on
the iPod in that format though. I don't know for sure if you can use the
older iPods as a hard disk though. I'll look into that.
The best way to share music files between computers would probably be a
crossover cable network connection using Appletalk and move/copy them (or
possibly a zip or jaz drive if you had that on both computers or an external
one you could move).
If your wife's PB w/ OSX has a big harddrive for mp3 files you might
want to get a newer iPod and run it from that. That would also give you the
advantage of being able to DL music files from iMusic, the Apple site
.99/song. They require OSX and iTunes 4 and are in AAC format (aka .mp4, I
think), supposedly a superior and more compact format than mp3. The iPod
will delete and add files automatically when you connect it to the computer
to match your iTunes library unless you turn that feature off.
I got mine from eBay, a 10 GB model. I love it; as I write this I'm
converting CDs I checked out from the library to mp3s w/ iTunes for my iPod.
I put almost all my cds on it and still only about 1/2 full- the 10 gb model
holds about 1500 songs.
If you have questions I can't answer try this guy, he helped me-
