Well I am!
Everyone is just coming on here and mouthing off about how STFax is crap
and how Active are crap and how Chris is crap, without stopping for one
minute and thinking and being calm and sensible!!
Lets start at the beginning. I have a Pace Voice (not Solo) modem, and
STFax 3.8. I bought STFax so that I could 1) send faxes and 2) set up my
own mini-voice mail thingy. So far, I've done very little of either, but at
least i'm able to.
People on here seem to me have come across a problem, and instead of
composing themselves and writing a nice calm friendly email, asking
perchance what might be wrong, and could anyone please spare the time to go
through things with them, instead barge in with both feet raising hell and
all the devils to send at Chris cos it doesn't work for them, God help
you!! And then they wonder when he gets pee'd off at them!!
When Chris announced the fax-back facilities at Active, I thought "Sod it"
and tried it DURING PEAK HOURS! Good god, was I insane?? And it didn't
work! Shock horror! After all I'd spent on my computer, it didn't work, so
it must be Chris's fault, right?? ;-)
Naturally enough, I thought it might be one of the settings I had in STFax.
I started to compose myself a nice friendly "pray tell, what might I have
done wrong?" sort of email when the phone rang.
I answered it, expecting it to be someone selling double glazing or some
such. Instead, Chris had spotted that i'd had a problem and PHONED ME UP!
he talked through a couple of things to change in the prefs, I changed
them, tried again, it still didn't work so he asked me to try some other
things and hung up. A bit more faffing and it STILL didn't work, and he
rang me back!! Eventually we tracked it down (a slight bug in STFax in
that it doesn't like talking to another copy of STFax in >9600 mode I think
was the conclusion, though Icould be wrong) and I was VERY impressed at
Chris in that not only did _he_ call _me_ TWICE but he seemed very
apologetic about it not working first time even though it was my fault with
the settings!!
So Chris isn't the demon you all seem to be making out. Yes, okay, I accept
that some people have had problems with STFax in that it doesn't work right
with their modem. If you're so desperate for it to work with that modem,
how about sending it to Chris/Wiz so that they can test your modem and
alter the STFax code specifically for it, eh? ;-)
Please everyone, there are few enough Amiga developers. Don't scare away
the ones we've got left.
Kev
PS I know for a fact that this kind of problem isn't limited to the amiga -
someone was telling me about a caller who'd phoned up and ranted and raved
for 10 minutes about CID not working on their modem when it should, what
they gonna do about it, etc. etc, when the guy on the helpdesk said "did
you get BT to enable CID on your phoneline then sir?" and the answer was a
muted "you mean it isn't automatic? how come 1471 works though?" - it seems
they though that 1471 was a service provided by their actual phone, not the
Telco!!
