These page hijackings should be detectable by using the online
scanners offered by various vendors, usually you'd have to run their
spyware scanners as this is the category these hijackers belong to.

It is most likely a Browser Helper Object, service, shortcut
modification or even a simple registry hack that performs this
hijacking, and therefore it is usually easy to detect, though a little
harder to remove.

What I usually do to prevent this, is to create a special shortcut for
my browser that runs the browser with the parameter of the home page
that I want, i.e. i run "iexplorer.exe" www.google.com which should
always bring me to the google page even though another startup page is
defined.
