Sanity check, do an:
ls -al /dev/cdrom
It is probably a link.  On my machine, it links to /dev/hdd.  Do:
ls -al /dev/hdd
(or whatever).  Does it look like:  brw-rw-rw-?  You don't
actually need the w's there but certainly there should be three
r's.  If not, you'll have to chmod it.

If you can play sound at all, probably not.  The SB-Live is a
nice card, though, and the newest kernels have support right
inside them.
