Please reply to these newbie questions;
1) References are made to versions of STORM LINUX 2000,i.e., rain, hail,
etc.
What version was released with the Maximum Linux magazines' distro of STORM
?
2) I ordered the STORM Linux users manual, but was disappoined on its
contents i.e.,
it did not seem to address the proper shutdown procedure, i.e., using
logout. The correct method seems to be a combination of 'logout' from the
wm, as well as, using SU to get access to root and executing a 'shutdown -h
now' command. This appears consistent with an O/S that is used as a server.
Also many apps are supplied, but not adequately addressed in the book, e.g.,
the Perl script capabilities and how one gets GIMP installed/running. I
have written a Perl script sucessfully, but the GIMP area appears to require
a compile. A pre-requiste for GIMP is the Gimp Tool kit(GTk). Is that
included in this Distro?
3) Since Perl scripts are very powerful for system access and control, why
are Perl scripts not distributed/indexed somewhere which simplify
installations and upgrades of existing disto software on a CD disc?

Numlockx was exactly what I needed, thanks Bob. For anyone wanting to
do the same thing, I found numlockx here:
http://www.debian.org/~adric/numlockx/
Install it with 'dpkg -i numlockx....blah,blah'
Then put the command 'numlockx on' in your x start-up. I just put in
the autostart folder in KDE.
Hope this helps.
Thanks again,

This is because your ISP probably has a DNS entry of its own it's trying to
enforce.

Usually a driver disk for the card. It should have a utility on it to change
the IRQ. but I don't think your problem is IRQ related.

Now that I know your setup here's what I suggest.
Grab a 486 and run a firewall service on it like Edge Fireplug
(edge.fireplug.net) or some other system. Use it as your gateway. Have the
FIREWALL dial your ISP to provide net access for your internal network. Then
your internal DNS should be fine. Though, in reality you don't need a DNS
for your internal machines, just entries in your /etc/hosts file work fine.
Alternatively, you might try getting DSL or cable (if you can get either in
your area), hook the modem up to your hub and do it that way.

It doesn't have to be the CD ROM, just change the ftp source to point to
HAIL instead of rain. Usually, just leave it at STABLE and all will work
out. But you can add a CD ROM source, that's how I did it during initial
beta testing.
then you run:
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
pay careful attention to the messages and the update should go smoothly.
HOWEVER: word of caution. I had problems getting the new Storm Package
Manager to work under a user account (even after using the gtksu util) and
SAS doesn't work for me at all.
I mentioned this during the beta testing but have not yet received a message
on how to fix it so that SAS works again. YMMV however.
to Stormix: Can you PLEASE fix that bug. I want to use SPM and SAS even
though I used apt-get dist-upgrade to upgrade to hail. I should NOT have to
reinstall just to gain access to those tools. Please let me know what the
fix is and if you need more info. I reported this bug several times during
the beta test and never received a reply.

The only practical reason for setting up DNS for private IP space is if
you have a huge internal network in which maintaining /etc/hosts files
would become tiresome. Your average SOHO user probably doesn't have more
than a dozen machines to worry about.

I have one of those soundcards that don't use /dev/dsp.
ls mod is listing soundcore and esssolo1.
sound works for xmms and all gnome/kde apps and au files are playing
just fine IF I highlight them in mc and press enter. Now I installed
ICQjava
from Mirabilis and I hear some distorted noise when is trying to
play a sound.
Any ideas of how I can make it work ?

Netscape bookmarks are in a file called ~/.netscape/bookmarks.html. If you
can export your bookmarks from IE, you should be able to edit the
resulting file into the right format.

Ok, here's a dumb one.. How do you find a file directory that starts with

As a matter of fact, I did succeed in adding the cdrom as a source.
And I , too, lost SPM entirely and SAS is...well, I'm not quite sure
what's become of it. :) But actually, the upgrade somewhat well
except that certain packages would not, no matter what, install,
namely libwrap0. It also would not install ddd, kbd and moonlight.
Also, even though helix gnome is supposed to be installed, I see
almost no evidence of it. Isn't sawfish the default wm for helix?
And where's the helix-update? It all seems a bit screwy
sometimes since I've upgraded.
Anywho, thanks for getting back to me and I'm happy to hear I'm
not the only one who lost SPM. Be well!

for some reason the apt-get dist-upgrade does not remove the old SAS and
associated components/libraries. Do it manually for now. I also installed
the new SAS manually afterward apt-get install task-apt (I think).

don't remember that one.

Yes, for whatever reason, these three packages were kept back. haven't got a
clue why. I haven't checked the versions so maybe they didn't need
upgrading.

Try removing all the .gnome* directories in your home directory and then run
X again. I had problems getting sawfish to come up default as well, but it
may be easier for you.

again, kill all .gnome directories and you'll see it.

nope. It's reported just no answer yet ;-(

This always worked for me, especially with Storm rain.
Do the following 3 steps in a terminal.
I gave the pppd file rx permission for users:
chmod a+rx /usr/sbin/pppd
I made /usr/sbin/pppd setuid for root
chmod +s /usr/sbin/pppd
and made the port accessible for users
chmod a+rw /dev/ttyS1
I also added myself to the dialout group and the dip group.
adduser joebloe dialout
adduser joebloe dip
I also edited the /etc/ppp/options file to read "# auth" on line
37 or thereabouts and further down, where it says "lock", I
changed it to "# lock".
That got my regular user online.
Check back if you continue to have problems.
