Are you using the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file that should have been
created after the installation?

For the fonts stuff it looks like you've got the wrong path names in
there.  X 4.0.2 sticks it's fonts in /etc/X11/fonts/ whereas 3.3.x used
the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/.  It seems to me that you're still using
the old config file.

Also try restarting gpm or even start it.  If you did a dist-upgrade to
woody a whole bunch of services would have been stopped.
