Only if the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ dirs are unpopulated. When I did
my dist-upgrade (using the debs from http://people.debian.org/~branden)
my /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ dirs were not removed.

My XF86Config-4 file contains the new paths however.

Also check that you've got all of the new font packages installed:
xfonts-base
xfonts-100dpi
xfonts-75dpi
xfonts-pex
xfonts-scalabl
I'm sure some dependency issues would have arisen.

And libfreetype6 which is an unstable package. This is for truetype
fonts. It was formerly xfsft I believe. Also included is the truetype
font engine XTT.

Try reconfiguring gpm. I don't actually use this package so my help
here will be limited.

If you want I can provide you with my XF86Config-4 file. You'll have to
manually edit it for your video card, monitor and mouse though =)
