Thanks... I'm at work now but will take a look when I get home.
I try root because I want to know if it works for anyone which it 
doesn't.
No, I didn't try fail-safe mode as that was not an option in my list of 
possible selection in gdm.  Just the different window managers.
Anyway, I'll look a bit when I get home.
