The box is a PIII 800 with 128Megs of Ram, 32MB ATI Xpert 2000 Video,
soundblaster Live card. I am running Storm Hail.

I generally use Helix/Sawfish, and I find when starting applications in X
that everything is slow. for example if i am listening to mp3's using XMMS
and start another application, the mp3 slows down and distorts and almost
stops playing until the other application loads. This does not seem to be
proper. Could it be esd?

So is there a good document that may help improve the performance of X?

Regards,

Tom Jones

Hi

More RAM maybe ? I found a huge difference in X when upgrading from 64
to 128.
That was with Gnome and KDE,blackbox didn't really care.
Above that it wasn't anything noticeable.Maybe you're not using an
acelerated
X server,maybe X4 and a DRI module would help...who knows?
Unless you post specifics on what hardware you have and what you feel
is slow exactly (console, network transfers,X ,kde/gnome) nobody can
really help you.
Think at it this way:My network is slow.how can I increae performance?
.Can you
give an exact answer without knowing specifics ? You can make an
assumption but
you can't be exact.
There isn't really a how-to on how to make Linux faster due to the
specifics
of each install.

Greetings
