Hi
Well,on that hardware Linux should fly.How big of a swap partition do
you have?
A quick look at " top " should tell you exactly who and how much system
resources is using.I would suggest you suggest you open an
xterm(console) and run top in there and look at what happens when you
use xmms.I'm not familiar with your ATI card but I would guess it's a
Rage128 chip.Do you remember how it was detected at install ? I also
think it may be an X server issue but probably somebody else more
familiar with that card can take a pick.
What will help,a swap partition of 128 Mb,recompile the kernel for your
machine,
the 2.4 series seem to be faster but those aren't directly supported in
hail.(
you need 2 packages from Debian unstable/sid : modutils and
modconf). When you recompile the kernel make sure also that under
"character devices " you have
support for /dev/agpgart and your MBD chipset,if you compile a 2.4
kernel is also a good idea to enable the DRI support for your card. Also
make sure the proper support for your specific IDE/PCI controller is
enabled, otherwise the generic one will give half of transfer rate.
