client side validation strips off back-slashes in user defined variables in 
validation.xml

I tried your test example, and the following showed up in the Javascript:

    function cdnmask () { 
     this.aa = new Array("lastName", "", new Function 
("varName", "this.conditionMask='^\\w*$'; this.cdnProperty='firstName'; 
this.cdnValue='piggy';  return this[varName];"));
    } 

As you can see, the \\w is still there.  I think you're being faked out by 
that fact that when you pass "\w" to alert, it prints as "w"
