client side validation strips off back-slashes in user defined variables in

Thank you for the detailed explaination. Are you trying to tell me that the 
string is passed in correctly? But my conditional mask does not do what it is 
supposed to match while the mask function from struts (using the same mask 
pattern) works correctly. All I do is to generate a regexp object from the mask 
string I passed in that will do the match for me. What it wants now (the 
conditional mask) is only 'w', not '\w', I just tried.
