A great way to solve the gnomon height problem with analemmatics.  Just
build a platform marked with dates on which the user stands.  This also
serves a  bench for sitting and the attractive visual component that Sara
mentioned.

Even so, I think I will go with Patrick and Henry's suggestion of a
horizontal dial with human gnomon.

Thanks for the Austrian sundial site.  All the dials pictured there are
beautiful (I especially liked "27)
