Steve, Your simplified approach to the mirror problem is refreshing. The vessel
would need to be attached in a way that kept it stationary.... frustrating if a wine glass were used. But I like the image of pouring an offering to the dial, or the sun, in order to make a reading. I may have missed an installment, but the problem I see with a ceiling dial based on a mathematically generated layout is the assumption that the ceiling is level.
