Greetings, fellow dialists,
Re the question concerning the day on which the sun sets at the same
moment in London and Paris, the following solution was offered by a sea
captain, long retired, of my acquaintance (we were shipmates in 1944).
Here he uses the tools of his trade (mostly tables) to solve a great
circle track.

 From London, 51deg. 30'N 0deg. to Paris, 48deg. 52'N 2deg. 23'E by
great circle:
Initial course 149.0 deg. T. (T = true course as opposed to magnetic
compass course)
Final course 150.8 deg. T.
Therefore sun's azimuth, London = 239.0 deg T.
                        " Paris = 240.8 deg. T.
Sin declination = cos latitude . cos azimuth
For London, declination = 18.7 deg. S
For Paris, declination = 18.7 deg. S
From Nautical Almanac this occurs on 16 November 2007.

(He could have added 26 January 2007)
I must buy him a pint.
