Hi Dan, I used Golden paints for the dial on the front of our house. Their website, as Jack says, is excellent. We started with, as you have, a washable emulsion paint wall which we washed and sanded smooth. I think we then gave it another coat so we started with a perfect finish. Golden paints have excellent colours and they will also tell you which ones to avoid for outdoor use, ie if the colour is not as permanent. But you won’t get them from a supermarket, you will ned an art shop or website, I used T.N. Lawrence & Sons Ltd – www.lawrence.co.uk But it depends where you are. We then used, as Golden advise, their protective coats. They protect against uv light and general pollution. We painted ours in 2008 and the colours are just as new. We used masking tape, but use a good quality one otherwise you will get bleeding and a furry edge. For the numbers and letters you can either print them onto sticky label sheet (the sort used for address labels, but available as one sheet) and cut them out with a fine craft knife, or onto tracing paper and pierce holes round the edge through which you can paint the outline to then fill in. I wrote a brief article about it in the British Sundial Society Bulletin in September 2008.
Hope it all goes well, Jackie Jackie Jones 50° 50’ 09” N 0° 07’ 40” W From: sundial [mailto:sundial-boun...@uni-koeln.de] On Behalf Of Jack Aubert Sent: 12 August 2014 18:45 To: 'cerculdestele .'; sundial@uni-koeln.de Subject: RE: Acrylic paint? A google search for outdoor acrylic paint led me to a paint web site for some detailed information about suitability and preparation for painting outdoor murals: http://www.goldenpaints.com/technicaldata/murals.php Apparently, the answer is yes. Acrylics are, according to the web site, color-fast and durable. The washable emulsion paint should provide a good base. Are you painting this on-site by hand? I have never been able to get satisfactory results – either straight lines or numbers or letters -- by hand painting. I have had to resort to masking tape, stencils and spray paint. With spray paint you have to be careful to make sure that successive layers are compatible. Jack Aubert From: sundial [mailto:sundial-boun...@uni-koeln.de] On Behalf Of cerculdestele . I'm working on a vertical sundial at my job and I was wondering... is it a good idea to use regular artists' acrylic paint (the one you find in the supermarket) to draw the hour lines / dial furniture on exterior washable emulsion paint or do I have to use oil color?
