also re ubuntu : there really are 2 ways to look at it, one is to use VDI and
run ubuntu desktops with oracle vdi the other is the standard sun ray server
install directly on ubuntu. first one is there today , second one is just, as
I said, a lot different than supporting rhel or oel and you can do if you hack
your stuff together today.
the reason for running sunray on ubuntu is that ubuntu has the
'best' desktop / user experience ... just look at what linux people
are running who can decide for themselves and do not have to follow
a company doctrine.
in any event, being a long time unix hacker and sysadmin I am quite
amazed when looking at some of the sunray scripting. It could be
done in a much more portable way, so that transitioning from one
unix to another would be much less of an effort ...
feel free to contact me off-list if this is interesting to you ..
virtualizing - is anyone running sun ray server virtualized ?
we are running a diskless ubuntu sunray server on esx ... it is
stable as a rock ... very nice environment ...
would it help if we made full images available for download
(would be for Oracle VM - btw also free download and use) that
contained OEL and Sun Ray Server pre-installed and preconfigured
for the standard setup ?
since we work on unix, this would not help, but I guess for people
who run sunray just to get to some other systems this might be nice
... sunray server appliance in a box ...
but as I said, investing 3-4 weeks in doing some spring cleaning of
the sunray software distribution would be a REALLY good idea ...
and cut down on support costs dramatically I guess ...
I have to agree here. I've been through some of that code, and while
nearly all of it is very good, it's clearly not written to be even
remotely portable. That's fine of course, it may simply not have been a
goal, and there's nothing wrong with that. It would, however, bring a
whole lot of flexibility to the table if it were to be "shaken out" a
bit and made more portable.
Now, I'd be the first to stand up and cheer if the whole world were
running Solaris...I've been hacking UNIX for about 25 years now and
Solaris is the best implementation I've ever seen, by far. But the fact
remains that there are people who are NOT running it.
Just voicing support of the idea of making it more portable, if
that's ever something to be considered within Oracle..
