My purpose in starting this conversation was to look only to look at the merits and cost of sunray and Wyse terminals and not to bash one or the other including Dell vs Oracle. I would only compare Wyse zero client because the thin client has an OS and that would not work in our environment. In general I think the sunray has more to offer like VPN. I would just like to mention I have found the Oracle sales rep ( Matt Schmitt) very helpful and very accommodating but the Oracle organization comes across very heavy handed and not flexible.

SunRay User Community:

My experiences are very similar to Garry's: we deployed about 30 SunRay
1G devices in our lab in late 1999. That was when you needed a
dedicated network, no provision for fail over, etc. In a lab where
folks move from station to station all day, the mobility is a big win
and always has been. The Solaris support required is minimal ... and
I'm more of a lab rat than a system administrator. We have the 100
client perpetual license for our SunRay, a support license for our
servers running Solaris 10. I don't even know what that costs ... it's
a small number in most enterprises. I see the purchase orders go by for
another Dell PC for a desktop and the bills for hours of desktop support
... our SunRays don't cost a fraction of that. I've got a shelf full of
spare 1Gs ... and when one occasionally dies, I replace it and I'm good
to go. Zero administration! I like that ...

My only beef: I wish the 1Gs weren't quite that reliable ... I'd like to
have some of the newer SunRays, but with 1Gs still on the shelf, I've
got no need to spend anything further.

I've made a number of stupid decisions over the years ... but going with
SunRays 14 years ago was a smart one that I'm still happy with.

Thanks,

John

Windows virtual machines or anything like that.

In this config, I find it hard to believe that anything is as cost
effective as Sun Ray, licensing costs are very, very low. As for TCO,
well that's up for debate, but I find once I get the GUI firmware onto
a Sun Ray, maintenance is over, and they "just work".

Sun Rays don't see that many updates, but I like that, isn't that the
point? That it is an extremely dumb device attached to a very non-dumb
server?

Anyway, great to hear from someone actually at Oracle. I'd love to see
firmware available at no-cost, but Oracle needs to make Sun Ray pay
the bills, I can accept that.

Are there actually any alternatives to Sunray that allow a group of 50
or so thin clients share a single instance of Linux (on a powerful server)?

We have done this for some time with Sunray. Admittedly Oracle pushes
the Virtualization solution of one VM per user which doesn't suit us,
and only supports Oracle Linux (we want Ubuntu).

However, I don't know that any of the other solutions even do this.

The alternative I can think of would be a simple X Terminal, I like X
Terminals as they work on pretty much every UNIX ever, and some other OS
like OpenVMS. I have had trouble with them though, compared to Sun Rays
with fonts, as the X Terminal itself draws text, not just draw an image
like the Sun Ray does.

X Terminals are cool, but Sun Rays seem better to me.

I think the one VM per user is a colossal waste of resources, but I guess
that's in the interests of the company selling you servers.

Oh man you seriously brought back some memories with this post.

In the early- to mid-1990s, I set up dozens of X-terminals built
around Sun-3/50. 3/60, and 3/80 machines running the "Xkernel" package.
Does anyone remember that? XKernel was basically a stripped-down SunOS
kernel, with /sbin/init replaced by a shell script that just started an
X server that came up and listened for XDMCP messages. My whole company
ran on those for many years. They were back-ended by a few Sun-3/200s,
3/400s, and (for the lucky ones) 4/300s.

I miss those days, and those machines. I really should've kept more
of them for myself.

On that note...if anyone in the general vicinity of western
Pennsylvania has any early Sun gear that needs a new home, or any
vintage gear at all (does "PDP" or "VAX" mean anything to you?), drop me
a note. I have a biggish building, housing a large collection, and am
building what will eventually be a public museum.

Not that I am aware of. Other thin clients seem to be more focused on
the Windows market.

If there was good support for Ubuntu we would likely have refurbished
our graduate computing lab earlier this year with Sun Rays instead of
desktop pc's. My personal desktop is a Sun Ray 2FS driven by a
Scientific Linux 5.8 server (repackaging of RHEL 5.8). I'm happy with
that except when the version of Firefox gets too far behind.

2009? Guessing pretty old :) How come SRS5.0 or the Operating system 11.1
doesn't seem to have the latest available firmware? Or are these no longer
supported?

I will dig around and see if I can find something newer...

hello,

I'm running Sun Ray Software 5.4.0.0.44 Sun Ray Operating Software 11.1.1.0.06
on Solaris X64 11.1 using SunRay 150 terminals.

Are these terminals still usable? I see there is no longer any firmware for
them in the 11.1.1.0.06 software.

My problem is, the 150 boots up, I get a login window. I enter a userid then a
password, then I just get an hour glass with a 26D error box that never goes
away.

What am I missing?

Thanks.
