We decided to move away from Sunrays two years ago when we realized
Oracle wasn't going to partner with us the way Sun Microsystems did. So
keep in mind this data testing we did with various thin clients was done
two years ago.
We are an Engineering college so our main concern was with graphical
performance with large 3D applications like AutoCad, ProE and Matlab.
We compared HP, Sunray 3, Wyse Z series, and nComputing.
nComputing came out first in graphical performance and cost point. But
their system at that time didn't scale well. The graphical performance
was best only when the device and the server were on the same sub-net.
Once the nComputing thin device was on another sub-net from the server
the graphical performance degraded. I have heard that nComputing has
over come this issue so I would highly recommend you check them out.
Wyse Z series came in second
Sunray 3 third
HP last.
We decided to go with Wyse as they have several models to choose from
that you can use for best fit for what needs to be done. We use the Z
series with Windows embedded OS for the better graphical performance and
USB devices support. Wyse management software is free for up to 500
thin clients.
Right now we use just basic RDP clients that come with the Wyse clients
that connects to a pool of 2008R2 Terminal servers (31 in the farm right
now) Load balancing is done with DNS round-robin. Each server was
configured to handle a 7 to 10 users, so you have idea how many clients
can be connected to our farm.

I'd like to hear your advice on specific HP or Wyse thin clients - we're
very close to having no thin clients at all, but I want to propose a
course of action where we have something in service...

So any idea if there will be a movement to reverse-engineer or open
up the hardware platform so I can still use my 2's and 3+'s (eg
develop a "generic" firmware for standard PXE booting)? Or are they
just paperweights now? Sad to see this product go. It was truly
one-of-a-kind.

The writing was on the wall, no surprise here. Glad we are just
about
done with swapping out all our Sunrays to Wyse clients.
