Just had a similar problem at work with an Imac, chime only , no video.
Checked ram and battery, all OK.

It turned out to be a fried hard disk.

I removed it to put in to another mac to download the info' off it, but
spotted on the small board under the hard disk was blackened around a chip
and smelt of burning.

Put in a replacement hard disk in the Imac, installed new software and it
runs OK again.
