My problem is that I can only boot into X from OS 9 or another X by using XPF 3 and designating a helper disk. When I try XPF 2.2.5 or XPF 3 with no helper, the boot keeps flashing "no bootable HFS partition" and eventually boots back into 9. I've tried the ATA card in both slots 2 and 3. It is currently back in slot 3. I thought that the Acard's had no slot or first-8-gigs issues.

As far as I know the only ATA PCI card without slot issues in the UMAX S900/J700 is the no

Will, you've got me confused now. You said back in August:

"The Acards as far as I know all work in any PCI slot"

I could tell no difference in behavior whether the card was in slot 2 or 3. I guess I'll try to browse he XPF forum, though - as you probably know - it is not a very easy forum to browse for archive information.

Gary, I was sure I still had a few good years left in me...;-) I've got to stop posting when I'm tired or overworked ;-)
I defer to my Aug 3rd post which was well researched and correct as far as I know. Thank you for pointing this out. However since that posting at least two people on the XPFacto list swear they have the first 8gb issue with an ACARD ATA card. I seem to remember that it was the 133 model but not sure with current track record ;-). I discounted the first person as being mistaken but then a second person reported the issue. Both swear the only way they can get OSX to run is to follow the first 8 GB rule. So worth trying even though it's not a widely reported issue. I've no idea why only some people have the issue.

What about using classic for the helper drive as I do? You didn't mention if you've tried this or not? I use it for booting OSX utilities CD's in XPFacto 3.0 . Best of luck. Will S
