... and updated to
 10.2.8.  I kept getting the black screen problem, and wound up wiping
 the X partition and reinstalling 10.2.6.  I have been trouble-free
 with it since.

Thanks for responding. Is this update a problem for most of us using 
unsupported machines or is it setup specific. You have Jaguar on an 
IDE drive and tried installing 10.2.8 on that drive? If a SCSI drive 
is used does the problem still occur? Have you read any thing about 
other peoples experiences? I think that some info was flying around 
recently and it passed me by. I think I remember that Will S. said 
that the upgrade to 10.2.8 via the software update app was NG and 
that he had success with downloading directly from Apple.

The SM list has been very quiet of late- I was hoping for more 
input. Where is everyone?

I had 10.2.6 running on two volumes on an IDE drive on an S900. I 
upgraded to 10.2.8 via software update and have had no problems. My 
ATA card is a SIIG ATA/133, with volumes formatted using OS 9's Drive 
Setup.

As far as saving your 10.2.6 to another volume, your best bet - as 
Will said - is to use Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes sure you get *all* 
files and blesses the System.
