I think (but don't really know) that any conflict or compatibility is going to be on a card by card basis. Pastor Mac is probably the best Networking authority on this list. Maybe he will contribute his two cents worth too.
Our C600 has one of the older Asante Ethernet cards installed. It was a factory installed card. We are using that card for networking to the other machines and for internet connections. The hub for everything is our Asante DSL router.
I don't remember having to disable any Apple Extensions when we set up our router with the DSL connection. I do remember that I had a nasty time figuring out which download from Asante's web site was the one I needed to get our PCI Ethernet card to function. It did need a specific driver, but that driver did not seem to conflict with anything else.
