Thanks, John! I am definitely the guy trying to initialize a J-700. I am
sorry if I have seemed to have ignored any help you may have offered in the
past. I've been somewhat overwhelmed with advice from this very
knowledgeable and eager group. I have spent a *lot* of time on this
project, much more than I ever anticipated. Here's where I am at this point
in time: I get a Mac disk icon with a question mark when I boot up. If I
try to boot from the CD-ROM, I get a frozen screen. I have managed to get
the computer to boot up from a Disk Tools floppy disk. I have used the
Drive Set-Up version 7.3.5. Drew Beckett stated that "If you're using the
copy of Apple HD SC Setup included in the System 7.5.3 Disk Tools, then it
will refuse to work on any drive that isn't Apple-branded. You're not SOL
yet though. Verify that your copy of Apple HD SC Setup is version
7.35Download this patch:
http://public.www.planetmirror.com/pub/info-mac/_Disk_&_File/apple-hd-sc-setup-735-patch.hqx.";
I have tried this and haven't been able to get this to pull up.

Anyway, when I try to initialize a hard drive from my boot floppy, it tells
me it is unsupported (either of them). I suspect the original HD is DOA, so
I have picked up a Seagate 19 gig SCA drive with an adapter from one on line
shop and a 4 gig IBM 50 pin SCSI drive from a guy on eBay who specializes in
Mac SCSI drives. He claims to have formatted the HD with Apple Drive Set-Up
(he didn't specify which version) and checked for bad blocks with FWB HD
Toolkit (BTW I do have a copy of HD Toolkit ver. 2.0.1). Currently I have
the SCSI bus set up with the 4 gig HD as the Master (terminated with ID=0)
and the Seagate HD as the slave (ID=2). I would prefer to load OS 9.1 via
the CD-ROM, but thus far this has not been possible. I have a version of
FWB CD-ROM Toolkit on my C-500 that I can copy but obviously I can't use it
until I have a functional hard drive with a system folder on it. I also
know from my personal experience that I have to pull the FWB CD-ROM Toolkit
out of the extensions folder on the C-500 when I wish to boot from a CD
disk. I have 512 meg of Fast Page RAM (new) interleaved). I know the
computer is functional, but the SCSI bus has me stumped. One list member
suggested I go to www.scsifaq.com, which I have done. There's a lot of good
info there, even if it is primarily oriented at the evil empire of MS. I
learned a lot at this site, but I'm still a no go, at this point. Any
advice you may have to offer would be greatly appreciated.
