I'm still working on getting my J-700 up and going. I've gotten tantalizingly close on several occasions, yet no cigar. Let me summarize what I've done:
1) I've installed a IBM 4 gig SCSI HD as the Master & a 19 gig Seagate Barracuda HD as a slave. I feel confident that both are fully functional. Thanks to your help, I was able to format these with the patched SC HD Set-Up ver. 7.3.5 (Did I mention, "Thanks, again!").
2) I have had ZERO success with my CD-ROM that came with it (Matsushita-Kobtobuki #CR-508-B). It spins but nothing else. The icon & mouse freeze whenever I attempt to use it. I have played with various combinations of ID settings, Term Power, Termination, Sector Size & Parity. From what I have read, it should be set for ID=3 or 1, with the Parity and Sector Size jumpers on, and no Term Power or Termination. It doesn't seem to matter which, though.
3) I purchased a used APS CD-RW SCSI on Ebay for less than $30 (including shipping). With this I've been able to boot up, but with no access to any folders. The screens comes up and looks like it going to load, then you end up with nothing mounted on the screen, just the OS 9.1 CD background. Same results with Disk Warrior. I've also tried moving the Yamaha CD-RW to the internal slot. It looks like it should be compatible. Physically it looks virtually identical to the original. I know this CD works, but I'm still having problems with freeze up when I try to use it.
4) I was able to remove the CD-RW (a Yamaha 4416S) and replace it with the IBM HD. No problem loading the OS onto the HD this way. I can now boot the J-700 externally from this disk, however, if I move the disk to the internal bus, it's no go. I'm guessing that the start-up disk is confused as to which scsi bus it should be looking for. That's the indication I get from the Apple System Profiler, anyway. I can boot the computer with a OS 7.5.3 floppy boot disk and it will allow me to mount both hard drives, but when I go to the start-up disk in the control panel, I get an error message saying that it can't find "Windowlib." Thus, I can't change the start-up disk/scsi bus. I've read that "Windowlib" is part of the "Appearance" part of the system folder. I'm going to try to reload the appearance and start-up disk from an operation PM 5500 that running the same OS via the external SCSI port.
5) At one stage, I was actually able to boot the computer from the IBM drive, but only with the extensions off. In the process of trying to figure out which extension was causing the problem, I created more problems. I was able to load the OS from the external CD-RW. It informed me that the installation was successful and asked if I wanted to reboot or quit to install other software. I rebooted, which was a mistake. I should have quit, then gone to the start-up disk in the control panel and made the correct selection. Stupid toad!
6) If I boot the HD externally, I can use SCSI Probe to check out my SCSI busses, and they seem okay, but what do I know?
7) Could my internal SCSI controller be bad? Also, there is a SCSI port inside the case next to the external SCSI port. I am assuming this connects to the external SCSI bus, but this is just an assumption on my part. Should anything be attached to this port? Any assistance you may have to offer would be appreciated. Thanks, in advance.
