Clearly seem to indicate which Power Color cards will work and which won't. So the wrongly labeled chips theory could be correct.
Can you look at your Sapphire cards and tell me where the Flash ROM chip is located and how to identify ? I'm trying to help David R buy a Power Color card which can be flashed. My machine is at the bottom of a stack of other machines and Monitors and would take forever to get to the card. I am guessing the chip lay out is the same on both cards though it could be different but not by much. thanks Will S

I can definitely say that the 64 meg DDR PowerColor Radeon 7000 being sold right now at NewEgg for $58 with free shipping is flashable. I bought one of these and flashed it using the same "single flash" in a PC routine I used for my ATI 32 meg card many months ago. It's working fine in my B&W G3. This card has all 3 connectors also - VGA, DVI and TV out.

NewEgg is currently showing PowerColor 32 and 64 meg PCI cards and Sapphire 32 and 64 meg PCI cards. The Sapphire cards are cheaper. Do a search on "Radeon 7000 PCI" at NewEgg.

If only it was that simple...
I am sure that the Power Color 64mb card was missing from the price list on the day I checked on it. It was back up the next day which makes me wonder if they put it back up after receiving a new shipment? There were about that time reports of the Power Color 32 mb card from one of these companies having the wrong chip for Mac flashing. At least the Power Color cards seem to have correctly marked flash chips unlike the Sapphire which seems to have 2 different chips but labeled the same.(just to drive us crazy ;-)
I also have every reason to believe the Sapphire cards based on others recent experience are no longer Mac flash-able. Which may well be the reason they have lowered the price. No way to tell for sure other then at first reports were of some cards working and others not . Last reports seemed to say current shipments of Sapphire cards no longer working. I get the impression that these companies are large and sell things really quickly.
So to be safe I was hoping to help David by finding out what the Flash ROM chip looks like and where it is on the card. We already have the chip numbers of the two different chips from Jeff W. Thanks for the reply. Will S
