Thanks for your comments, David -

Having come across info on running bus powered devices and potential pitfalls,
I never considered driving such things as hard drives from the firewire port.
Operating a compact flash card reader, however, may be less troublesome.
The S900 has been carefully guarded since Day 1 (new) with voltage stabilized
UPS and I have yet to run into any gremlins.
Since I am having to mail order the firewire card reader due to a lack of local
source, I am seeking info from folks who may have run such a device off a
firewire PCI card.
I have the following cards and not sure which ones are actually drawing current
or maybe all PCI cards do.
Inito Miles UW.
Sonnet Tempo ATA/66.
Machfire Firewire (3 external/ 1 internal)
Ultimate Rez 8 mb.

Only thing connected to the Machfire is a self-powered firewire HD.

I have posts at another user group (for photogs) and hope to hear something.

Alan
