So what you are having issues with is making a direct copy of a CD ? Not burning
VCD's, DVD's data cd's etc? I've never tried this so can't say if any of my CDrw
or DVD burners can do this on a UMAX machine. I do remember that it is
recommended to make a disk image to the hard drive as the best way to do this

Yes, Will, everything else is fine. What my logic comes up with is that if I had a real
speedy CD spinner, then the data would be spun up and ready to be transferred fast
enough for the software to get enough of it to keep the burner's buffer filled.

I wouldn't be certain of that. It may be true in your case--there are so many variables--but here is my bizarre experience.

I have a Yamaha 4416 on SCSI Bus 1 (the slow SCSI bus). I also have a Plextor 20X CDROM drive on that bus. I have an Acer 16X DVDROM drive on my VST card and the Acer drive is supposed to be a 52X or maybe 46X CDROM drive as well as a DVDROM drive. I've never noticed any problems outside of burning CDRs.

However, when attempting to copy a CDROM to my Yamaha drive, with the original CD in my Acer 16X/52X drive, everything appears to work fine and the disk passes the verify function at the end, but when I do a "Compare" which is a separate function available in Toast, the newly burned disk fails.

When I do exactly the same operation with the original CDROM in the Plextor 20X drive, it works fine. So the slower CD reader on the slower bus makes a good copy. Go figure.

What really puzzles me is that the Verify fuction does not catch the error that the Compare function catches.

There's just bizarre stuff all through this experience, but I was burning three different copies of two different disks, so I tested it pretty thoroughly and it was consistent. So, depending on circumstances, the faster drive is not necessarily the better source.
